At SMM 2024, the leading major trade fair for the maritime industry, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and NVL announced the planned establishment of a joint venture and signed a cooperation agreement. The aim of the cooperation is to jointly realize the construction of the MEKO A-400 AMD – a pioneering ship concept from thyssenkrupp Marine Systems that was specially developed to meet the requirements of a German Navy air defense frigate.

On August 9th, the Brazilian Navy, the procurement agency EMGEPRON, and the company Águas Azuis, which was founded by thyssenkrupp, Embraer Defense & Security, and Atech, jointly celebrated the naming of the first of four frigates, which took place at the thyssenkrupp Estaleiro Brasil Sul shipyard in Itajaí, Santa Catarina. The 550 invited guests included the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as well as the Brazilian Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, and other high-ranking representatives from Germany and Brazil. The godmother of the ship ‘Tamandaré’ was Vera Brennand, wife of the Brazilian Minister of Defense.

The Brazilian Navy, the procurement agency EMGEPRON, and the company Águas Azuis, which was founded by thyssenkrupp, Embraer Defence & Security, and Atech, jointly celebrated the keel laying of the country’s most modern frigate. The ceremony took place on June 6, 2024 at the thyssenkrupp Estaleiro Brasil Sul shipyard in Itajaí. The new frigate, the “Jerônimo de Albuquerque”, is the second ship in Brazil’s Tamandaré-class frigate program, for which a total of four units are to be built. These MEKO® class ships combine cutting-edge technology and robust combat capabilities.

Four MEKO® 200 HN (Hellenic Navy) frigates have been in service with the Hellenic Navy since the mid-1990s. In order to extend the service life of the fleet, the Navy intends to commission a comprehensive modernization (mid-life upgrade). The original equipment manufacturers of the four MEKO® 200 HN frigates, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Thales, were approached for the modernization program.

In a festive ceremony held in Bremerhaven on 15 December, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems handed over the frigate “AL-QADEER” to the Navy of the Arab Republic of Egypt. “AL-QADEER” is the third in a series of four MEKO® A-200 EN frigates. The ceremony was attended by high-ranking representatives from the Egyptian and German Navy.

On May 26th, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems handed over a frigate to the Navy of the Arab Republic of Egypt. It is the second in a series of four MEKO® A-200 EN frigates. The ceremony in Bremerhaven, which was attended by high-ranking Egyptian and German Navy officials, also included the naming of the vessel. The Commander in Chief of the Egyptian Navy, Vice Admiral Ashraf Ibrahim Atwa, named the ship “AL-QAHHAR”, meaning “The Irresistible Subduer”.

On March 24th, the Brazilian Navy and Águas Azuis, a special purpose entity (SPE) formed by thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Embraer Defense & Security and Atech, celebrated another milestone in the construction of the Tamandaré frigate: the ship’s keel laying. The ceremony, which took place at thyssenkrupp Estaleiro Brasil Sul in Itajaí, Santa Catarina, was attended by the Commander of the Navy Fleet Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen, and other civil and military authorities from the defense sector and the naval industry.

thyssenkrupp Marine Systems today handed over the first-of-class MEKO® A-200 EN to the Navy of the Arab Republic of Egypt. A total of four ships were ordered, with the first three units produced in Germany and the fourth vessel built by Alexandria Shipyard in Egypt. At today’s ceremony in Bremerhaven, the frigate “AL-AZIZ” was accepted by the Egyptian Navy after only 38 months of the contract becoming effective.
